How the Hushpuppy got it's Name

Hushpuppies are a southern tradition that started when people would feed their dogs pieces of the fried cornmeal batter when they begged for food. After the scraps were given to the dogs, the owner would say "Now hush, puppy."

This delicious fact also lends to the naming orgin of the famous shoe. A shoe salesman in the 50s touting a new kind of casual, soft-soled shoe was making calls on those very same farmers feeding hushpuppies to hush thier barking dogs. After a long day on his feet, he got the idea to hush his own "barking dogs" with comfy shoes and the rest is history.
